The generous star stepped in after discovering the organisation in Roswell - where he is shooting new movie The Book of Eli - was being forced to close down because of financial problems.

According to reports, Washington handed over a cheque and urged Roswell residents to follow suit, resulting in a further $5,000 (GBP3,350) in donations.
