The Oscar-winner admits she was equally distraught as her actor husband Greg Wise when new laws put an end to puffing on cigarettes in bars.

And Thompson admits she was stunned by her partner's crafty solution.

She says, "Our neighbourhood pub that we loved when we got married was closed and at the same time the smoking ban came in... (My husband) was so upset because he couldn't smoke and have a beer at the same time.

"So he took matters into his own hands and built himself a pub. He went to the do-it-yourself shop, bought a lot of wood and nails and things and about 80,000 ash trays so that people come to the pub and they can smoke."

The couple married in 2003.
