The Californication star is take the lead role in a film chronicling the life of James Miranda Barry - a woman who pretended to be a man in order to qualify as a doctor.

McElhone's husband, British plastic surgeon Martin Kelly, suffered a cardiac arrest in May (08), collapsing on the doorstep of the couple's London home.

Heaven and Earth, directed by Oscar-winner Marleen Gorris, will begin filming next year (09) - after McElhone gives birth to her third child with Kelly.
