J.K. Rowling author of the 'Harry Potter' books, leaves the U.S. District Court. New York City, USA - 16.04.08
Rowling decided to offer the cash to the ruling Labour party because she believes they will help struggling single parent families more than their rival Conservatives.
The author, who has raked in a huge fortune through her massively popular wizard books, wrote the first story, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, when she was a single parent living in rented accomodation in Edinburgh, Scotland.
She insists she understands the needs of single mothers - and doesn't agree with the Conservative party's promises to offer married couples tax-breaks if they get voted into power.
She says, "The Labour government has reversed the long-term trend in child poverty, and is one of the leading EU countries in combating child poverty.
"David Cameron's (Conservative leader) promise of tax perks for the married, on the other hand, is reminiscent of the Conservative government I experienced as a lone parent.
"It sends the message that the Conservatives still believe a childless, dual-income, but married couple is more deserving of a financial pat on the head than those struggling, as I once was, to keep their families afloat in difficult times."
