The star was released from prison last week (ends11May08) after serving 29 days of a 14 week sentence for violating his probation, and proudly displayed a certificate to the waiting media proclaiming his abstinence from narcotics while inside London's Wormwood Scrubs prison.
He tells British music magazine the NME, "I was banging it. The only time I tested clean was when I used someone else's piss."
But Doherty insists during his time in jail, he was not exposed to drugs - and his days of urine-swapping are far behind him.
Doherty adds, "There are ways of getting gear (drugs) in, but how do you get a syringe in? I was in segregation for the last three weeks. I was in debt to big-time drug dealers.
"All I'll say to that is: 'Chance would be a fine thing'."
