Penn, who directed the film, would get up each morning to see Vaughn going to bed after all-night poker sessions.

He says, "I don't know when Vince sleeps.

"While we were shooting in South Dakota, Vince had his card games. I'd crash out after a few drinks. When I'd get up the next day, a few hours before shooting, Vince would just then be grabbing up his winnings from a poker game that they had started the night before, after we got home from work.

"And he took everybody's money."
