The British funnyman was enrolled into the Royal Wolverhampton School when he was just seven years old, after his father died in a road accident.
Idle struggled to survive the bullying environment of the establishment, and fears he would have dropped out prematurely without music to distract him.
He says, "It was a lifeline. Boarding school being a brutal place for me, I learnt to retreat into my head and music became an escape.
"I can cope with almost everything now, including, I should think, prison."
