The model's boyfriend photographer Simon Atlee was killed in the disaster, while Nemcova herself was badly injured.

Since the tragedy, she set up the Happy Hearts Fund - which helps children affected by natural disasters and other hardships.

And a recent trip back to Thailand made her realise the organisation has made a difference.

She says, "We opened up a school and a computer center in Thailand just three weeks ago. Fifty (children) were trying to hold me and bring me to show me the classrooms. They were so excited - when we got there, we were jumping around. It was amazing to see that it really touches their lives and makes them really happy."
