Anthony Hopkins and Harry Belafonte in 'Bobby'
Estevez was so worried about ruining his friendship with the actor he kept quiet about the film when the pair met for lunch soon after Hopkins had been sent the script.
He tells Empire magazine, "I had lunch with Tony but didn't actually mention the film. I didn't want to be that guy that calls you and says, 'Hey I got a script!'
"Especially with friends, since you then start to avoid them when you see them at the market because you think, 'They didn't read it'. Or, 'Maybe they did and they thinks it's terrible.'"
However, Estevez' concerns proved unwarranted - Hopkins leaped at the chance to play retired doorman JOHN CASEY in the Golden Globe-nominated film.
