DOWN TO THE BONE

Synopsis: Irene (Vera Farmiga, The Manchurian Candidate, Martin Scorsese's The Departed, Anthony Minghella's Breaking and Entering) is a working class mother living in upstate New York . When one of them falls into a relapse with the addiction, their commitment to staying clean - and to each other - shatters. This beautifully wrought film accurately and authentically explores the wrenching road to recovery without ever resorting to histrionics. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Cast: Donna Reed, Henry Travers, James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell

Synopsis: A good but slightly ineffectual man tries to off himself after an error that really wasn't his fault. In Christmas carol fashion, his crusty-but-lovable guardian angel shows up to give him a tour of the world without his presence, and it isn't a pretty place. Moral courage, small-town American life, civic cooperation, and family love are glorified; corporate greed and self-involvement are vilified; at the climax, a blanket of snow like spun sugar makes everything pure and clean like redemption itself. The DVD version contains a behind-the-scenes featurette and an interview with director Capra. Academy Award Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (James Stewart), Best Editing, Best Sound.
