Clooney, a staunch campaigner against the genocide in the Sudan and the corruption of oil barons, fears his romantic past would dominate press columns instead of the serious business of policy-making.

He says, "I couldn't run for office. I have slept with far too many women.

"If I ran for office there would be juicy stories dragged up from the past."
