MCCARTNEY RETURNS TO PERFORM AT ED SULLIVAN THEATER

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY went back in time for his first appearance on the LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN - by performing outside the building where the BEATLES made their U.S. debut 45 years earlier.

The music legend staged an outdoor concert on Wednesday (15Jul09) at the famed Ed Sullivan Theater where Letterman hosts his nightly talkshow.

And the surprise gig was especially poignant - not only was it McCartney's first interview with the beloved chatshow legend, but the venue was where Beatlemania in America first kicked-off.

In 1964, the Fab Four were invited to perform on Ed Sullivan's music show on three consecutive Sundays, and the slots led them to land their first number one stateside with I Want To Hold Your Hand.

And McCartney told Letterman how the small gig brought the memories flooding back: "You know, I was just thinking today when we first came here, we'd never seen this kind of thing. TV studios in England were kind of all on one floor, the makeup was next door to this.

"But here, it's like an apartment block - you know, you go to makeup and you take an elevator five floors, then you go to wardrobe and you come here. But, yeah, just the memory of being here is great. It was kind of scary the first time."
