A judge has permanently banned a follow-up to THE CATCHER IN THE RYE from hitting book stores in the U.S. - after previously ruling the tome is 'substantially similar' to J.D. SALINGER's classic novel.
The reclusive writer is suing Swedish author Frederik Colting over his book 60 Years Later: Coming Through The Rye, claiming the follow-up is "a rip-off" of his influential 1951 novel.
Colting claimed his work, which features a character based on Salinger's famous antihero Holden Caulfield, is a literary commentary rather than a sequel.
Judge Deborah Batts issued a 10-day restraining order against the title last month (Jun09) - and now she has ruled against the publication of 60 Years Later.
In court on Wednesday (01Jul09) she dismissed Colting's claim that he wrote the new book to critically examine Salinger's most famous character, calling the new book and his argument "problematic and lacking in credibility".
The book was scheduled to be published across the U.S. later this summer (09).
