R.E.M. THEATRE BURNED DOWN

Rockers R.E.M. are mourning the loss of a theatre which hosted their first shows.

The Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia was burned to the ground after a mysterious blaze ripped through the venue on Friday (19Jun09).

As well as being the birthplace of R.E.M., the venue also featured concerts by other hometown heroes like the B-52s and the Indigo Girls.

R.E.M. often used the venue to host album release parties and benefit shows.

A statement from the band reads, "All of us here certainly wish (owner) Wilmont Greene and his staff the best of luck and Godspeed in their efforts to rebuild the Athens landmark."
