MADONNA is set to turn her attentions to orphanages in the African country of Lesotho if she is denied the chance to adopt MERCY JAMES from Malawi.
The pop superstar launched a legal battle to adopt Mercy, four, in April (09) but her bid was turned down on the grounds that prospective parents have to be resident in the country for 18 to 24 months prior to an adoption.
The singer, who previously adopted a Malawian boy called David in 2006, appealed the ruling and is awaiting a verdict from three High Court judges in the country later this month (Jun09).
And Madonna has already got plans in place to search for prospective daughter from another African nation, according to British newspaper the Mail on Sunday.
A source tells the publication, "Madonna is not a patient person, she's used to getting what she wants. She has said she won't give up on Mercy, but if she's blocked from adopting her legally, then she will think about trying to adopt another baby. She has already started looking at other African countries. She has promised David a sister and she wants another African child.
"She has done some research on Lesotho and because it's a place that is ravaged by AIDS and has a high number of orphans, it could be the perfect second choice."
A representative for Madonna insists the star is still hopeful she will be successful in her bid to take Mercy home, saying, "There is no news on when the ruling is going to happen. We remain hopeful."
