ASHANTI'S CO-STAR WAS HOMELESS A YEAR AGO

R&B star ASHANTI's canine co-star in upcoming Broadway musical THE WIZ is a former stray street dog.

Little Nigel was a homeless shelter dog just a year ago, and The Wiz will be his New York stage debut when it kicks off at City Center later this month (Jun09).

The pooch was abandoned on the street before finding haven with the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society, according to BroadwayWorld.com. The doggie star was then discovered on the Humane Society's website by Bill Berloni, an award-winning theatrical animal trainer, who was looking for just the right dog to play Ashanti's Toto.

Joining Nigel and Ashanti in the urban musical revamp of The Wizard of Oz is Orlando Jones, who plays The Wiz.
