CHINESE DIRECTOR DEFIES BAN AND SHOWS FILM AT CANNES

Filmmaker LOU YE faces serious backlash in his native China after screening his controversial new movie at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

The director shot Spring Fever in secret after Chinese authorities slapped him with a five-year ban following the release of his provocative film Summer Palace, which was shown at Cannes in 2006.

That movie stirred up controversy because it featured scenes from the 1989 student uprising, which culminated in shocking images from Tienanmen Square in Beijing - the scene of a horrific massacre.

Lou Ye's graphic new movie chronicles homosexuality in his native China, and was shown at Cannes on Thursday night (14May09).

After the screening, the defiant director told reporters, "I hope I'm the last director to be banned in China.

"I hope nothing will happen when I get back to China. I am just a director making a film."
