DANCING STAR CASTRONEVES ACQUITTED

Racing driver and U.S. TV's DANCING WITH THE STARS champion HELIO CASTRONEVES has been cleared of tax evasion by a Miami, Florida court.

The 33 year old was arrested last year (08) by cops investigating an alleged scam involving Castroneves, his sister Katiucia and his attorney Alan Miller.

Authorities accused the trio of hiding more than $5.5 million (£3.69 million) in Castroneves' earnings between 1999 and 2004.

He was charged with six counts of federal tax evasion and one count of conspiracy.

But on Friday (17Apr09), a jury ended a six-week trial and six days of deliberations by acquitting him of all the tax evasion charges; they were hung on the conspiracy charge and asked the judge to declare a mistrial.

Speaking outside the court, Castroneves told reporters, "I just want to thank God, and my fans, and all of the people who prayed for me. It has been a very difficult place to be in."
