FLAUTIST SHANK DEAD AT 82

BUD SHANK, the flautist who gave summer anthem CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' its distinctive sound, has died, aged 82.

Shank became a big name in California jazz circles in the 1950s after moving to the state from his native Ohio, and he also became a U.S. pioneer of Brazilian music.

But it's his work with Sergio Mendes and the Mamas and the Papas that helped him cross over to the mainstream.

He also enjoyed his own chart success in 1966 with his covers album Michelle.

Shank was recording a new album in San Diego, California when he died last week (02Apr09).
