Internationally-acclaimed photojournalist GIANNI GIANSANTI, a longtime photographer of the late Pope John Paul II, has lost his battle with bone cancer. He was 52.
Giansanti, who captured still images of world leaders and fashion designers on his lens for nearly three decades, died on Wednesday (18Mar09) in Rome, Italy.
His career launched in 1978, when his photograph of the body of former Italian prime minister Aldo Moro - kidnapped, shot and left in the trunk of a car by members of a terrorist group - received international attention.
Giansanti's most famous subjects also include Pope Benedict XVI, fashion designer Valentino and a variety of world leaders, such as former Soviet head of state, Mikhail S. Gorbachev.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, and two children.
