SPECTOR JURORS GIVEN MANSLAUGHTER OPTION

A judge in the PHIL SPECTOR murder retrial has ruled jurors can consider a manslaughter conviction against the star.

The music mogul is accused of shooting actress Lana Clarkson in the foyer of his Alhambra, California mansion in 2003. His defence team maintains Clarkson shot herself.

Both prosecuting and defence attorneys have now rested their cases and closing arguments are scheduled to begin on Monday (23Mar09).

But at a hearing on Friday (20Mar09), Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Fidler said he was "mandated under the law" to give the 12 jurors the option to consider a verdict of involuntary manslaughter instead of second-degree murder.

However, Spector's attorney, Doron Weinberg, has called the ruling "absolutely erroneous", adding, "All it does is confuse the jury."

The trial continues.
