JUDD JOINS MINING PROTEST

Actress ASHLEY JUDD joined conservation activists outside Kentucky's state Capitol on Tuesday (17Feb09) in a bid to stop the mining of Appalachian peaks.

The protesters were raising awareness of the practice known as mountaintop removal, where regal peaks are legally blasted to unearth coal.

Judd was among 500 people who joined a rally in support of legislation that would end the mining.

She told reporters she visited mountaintop removal sites last year (08) and was shocked by the "barren moonscapes" she saw."
