UNIONS REVAMP COMMERCIAL CONTRACT

Bosses at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) have taken a step towards breaking the stalemate with producers over a new TV-and-film contract, by re-evaluating with its sister union over how members are paid for commercial work.

Negotiators at SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) will meet at the bargaining table to review their commercial contract, which expires on 31 March (09).

The two groups are reportedly concerned members aren't earning enough for their work with the current agreement, known as Phase One, in light of growing technology, with ads expanding to the internet and mobile realms.

A joint statement from the unions reads: "On Saturday, February 7, the Joint National Board of Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists met in videoconference plenary in Los Angeles and New York and approved by an overwhelming majority a package of proposals for the changes to the AFTRA Television and Radio Commercials Contracts and SAG Television Commercials Contract.

"The SAG and AFTRA Commercials Contracts will be bargained under the terms of the Phase One Agreement that applies to the Commercials Contracts negotiations only."

The threat of a strike by SAG's 120,000 cardholders has been looming since their labour contract expired in June (08) after negotiations collapsed.

Talks between the two unions are scheduled to begin on 23 February (09).
