MEXICAN MODEL ZUNIGA RELEASED FROM HOUSE ARREST

Mexican beauty queen LAURA ZUNIGA has been released from house arrest due to insufficient evidence - five weeks after police found a haul of cash and weapons in a vehicle she was travelling in from western Mexico.

Zuniga was arrested at a South American checkpoint and taken into custody in Zapopan, Jalisco on 23 December (08), along with seven men who were allegedly carrying $53,000 (£37,860) in cash and a stash of illegal guns.

The model, who was recently crowned Miss Sinaloa Hispanic America 2008, left custody on Friday (30Jan09).

Zuniga alleged she had been kidnapped by her boyfriend, Ángel Orlando García Urquiza, also reportedly arrested at the scene.

In a statement the Attorney General's Office says, "No information was found that tie (Zuniga) to any criminal activity."

A judge has reportedly agreed to to extend the house arrests of the seven men detained along with the model.
