ALBA HITS BACK AT 'DUMB' JIBES

JESSICA ALBA has blasted right-wing TV news pundit BILL O'REILLY after he suggested the actress didn't know her history on his Fox News programme in America.

The Sin City star took to her MySpace.com blog to defend herself after O'Reilly called her "misguided" for poking fun at a journalist during an inauguration event last week (20Jan09).

The new mum asked the reporter what he liked most about new U.S. President Barack Obama, and when he refused to answer, she joked, "That's it, be neutral. Be Sweden about it."

O'Reilly and website TMZ.com both subsequently ridiculed Alba, insisting she meant Switzerland, not Sweden - but the actress has had the last laugh in cyberspace.

On her blog, she writes, "I find it depressing that, in the midst of perhaps the most salient time in our country's history, individuals are taking it upon themselves to encourage negativity and stupidity.

"Last week, Mr. Bill O'Reilly and some really classy sites insinuated I was dumb by claiming Sweden was a neutral country. I appreciate the fact that he (O'Reilly) is a news anchor and that gossip sites are inundated with intelligent reporting, but seriously people... it's so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland.

"I appreciate the name calling and the accurate reporting. Keep it up!"

TMZ.com has since apologised for criticising the actress, stating, "She is absolutely correct. Sweden was a neutral country... 60 years ago. We apologise for not considering the political climate of the world in 1942 when we suggested she may have meant, 'Be Switzerland' - a country that is currently neutral."
