The critically-mauled movie took in $21.5 million (GBP15 million) over the weekend to keep vampire versus werewolves film Underworld: Rise of the Lycans from the number one spot.

Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino comes in at three on the new box office chart and family film Hotel for Dogs, starring Emma Roberts and Lisa Kudrow, debuts at four.

Oscar favourite Slumdog Millionaire rounds out the top five at five.
