AUSTRALIAN SINGER SOPHINA PRAISES HERO PILOT

Australian singer-songwriter EMMA SOPHINA has praised the hero pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 after a visit to New York left her narrowly escaping a terrifying plane crash.

Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger helped save the lives of 155 passengers and crew when he was forced to land on the Hudson River on Thursday (15Jan09) after a collision with a flock of geese upon departure from New York's LaGuardia airport.

The 26-year-old tells the New York Daily News she had come to New York to find inspiration and was heading to Charlotte, North Carolina to visit friends.

But instead she found herself captured in photographs, escaping the submerged plane in a lifeboat.

Sophina tells the newspaper, "I heard a startling sound, a loud pop. Now I know that it was the sound of the birds hitting the plane.

"I thought, 'OK, I'm going to heaven now. But then someone said we hit water.

"I grabbed a life jacket and made my way to the exit. The only way I can describe it is it was an orderly mess. A very orderly mess.

"God Bless Sully. If it wasn't for the graceful Sully, I wouldn't be here talking to you today. He gave us such a graceful landing under such terrible conditions. He is a real hero.

"I really do feel inspired. I'm going to write a song about this called, 'My Life in the Bottom of the Hudson River.'"
