WINSLET SHUNS THE SPOTLIGHT

British actress KATE WINSLET is determined to keep her private life out of the press - because she doesn't want to become a 'walking soap opera' like ANGELINA JOLIE and her partner BRAD PITT.

The Titanic star, who is married to director Sam Mendes, is adamant she only courts the media when she needs to help publicise her films and keeps herself away from the spotlight when she isn't working.

And Winslet - who triumphed over Jolie in the best actress category at the recent Golden Globe Awards - is grateful her life hasn't followed the same path of the Hollywood power couple, who attract unrivalled press attention wherever they go.

She says, "Although I don't know them, I do think about their situation. They're like a walking soap opera, and the public wants to know what's going to happen next. I didn't choose this profession because I wanted to be famous."

And Winslet is convinced she will be able to shield her two young children, Mia, eight, with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, and Joe, five, with Mendes, from the Hollywood scene.

She adds, "I don't want Mia or Joe to think being famous is about wearing beautiful dresses - if you're on a red carpet and wearing a fabulous frock, it's the result of years of hard graft."
