Contemporary music patron BETTY FREEMAN has died. She was 87.

The champion of the arts and philanthropist passed away on Saturday (03Jan09) after a battle with pancreatic cancer at her Beverly Hills home, according to her daughter Shelley Butler.

Freeman was famous for commissioning and underwriting the works of composers, including John Cage, Philip Glass and Pierre Boulez.

It is thought she helped support nearly 80 musical masters, offering gifts of a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars to ensure their talents were heard.

Freeman inherited a vast wealth from her chemical engineer father, and worked throughout her life as a photographer, with many of her pictures displayed at Carnegie Hall.

Twice married, Freeman had four children with first husband Stanley, before marrying painter and Franco Assetto.
