SAM WORTHINGTON IS FAVOURITE TO PLAY THE PHANTOM

Little-known Australian actor SAM WORTHINGTON is the hot favourite to land the coveted role of the PHANTOM in the forthcoming comic book movie adaptation - after winning a vote of confidence from the film's screen writer.

Fellow Aussie Tim Boyle has been handed the job of taking the superhero to the big screen in The Ghost Who Walks - and he is keen to cast as much homegrown talent as possible.

Boyle worked with Worthington on low budget action movie Fink and is keen for the pair to reunite.

According to Moviehole.net, the two have yet to discuss the role - and Boyle has yet to learn from studio chiefs if he will also be allowed to direct the movie.

Worthington, 22, will next be seen in director McG's Christian Bale-starring Terminator: Salvation.
