MARIAH CAREY's record-breaking music career was celebrated in a special tribute at the 36th Annual American Music Awards.
The singer was presented with the special award by actor-turned-singer Terrence Howard at Sunday night's (23Nov08) event in Los Angeles.
Holding the award while pay tribute to Carey, he said, "We want to salute her for a couple of amazing achievements so we have something special to present to her, and I'd like to read the inscription: The American Music Awards honours Mariah Carey for surpassing two of the longest-standing records in music history, formally held by Mr. Elvis Presley. In 2008, Mariah Carey became the solo artist with the most number one hits of all time."
Introducing Carey's performance, he added, "In addition, Mariah has spent more weeks at number one than any other artist in the history of recorded music."
The singer took to the stage, escorted by her new husband Nick Cannon, who kissed her hand before she sang her new hit single I Stay in Love.
