AFRICAN SINGERS HONOURED AT FIRST-EVER MTV AWARDS CEREMONY

The first ever MTV African Music Awards ceremony took place on Saturday (22Nov08) night, with acts from across the nation performing at the event.

Two Nigerian singers won top awards at the first MTV ceremony to honour African artists; singer D'banj won the Artist Of The Year gong, while his compatriot, Naeto C, was handed Best New African Act at the ceremony in Nigeria's capital Abuja.

Kenyan artist Wahu received the Best Female Artist award at the iconic event.

Performers from South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Gabon and others were also nominated.

Winners were selected by fans sending text messages rather than being voted for by industry bosses.

MTV hopes the awards can offer artists more exposure and celebrate the continent's artistry.
