LATEST: The family of tragic music executive SHAKIR STEWART has paid tribute to the Def Jam Executive and revealed he was "in deep pain" before his death.
Stewart, who succeeded rap mogul Jay-Z as head of Def Jam Records, was found shot dead in his Atlanta, Georgia apartment on Saturday (01Nov08).
The 34-year-old is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, although the cause of death has yet to be officially confirmed by police.
And now Stewart's fiancee, Michelle Rivers, has released a joint statement with the rest of his family, telling of his emotional problems leading up to the tragedy.
The statement reads, "It is difficult to express or explain in words what led to the tragic occurrence on Saturday. Over the past several weeks, Shakir's behaviour was inconsistent with the man we all know and love. As much as we all tried to help him, Shakir was in deep pain and largely suffering in silence. Please remember Shakir for who he was... a wonderful father, partner, son and friend."
Stewart had worked for Def Jam since 2004, and was responsible for signing rappers Rick Ross and Young Jeezy to the label founded by Russell Simmons and producer Rick Rubin in the mid-1980s.
