HAL KANT, the man who solved all the GRATEFUL DEAD's legal woes, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 77.
The lawyer worked for the Dead for more than 35 years and helped them win legal battles that brought the band millions of dollars.
Kant was so revered by the group that late frontman Jerry Garcia dubbed him 'Czar'.
He also represented Janis Joplin, Sonny + Cher and Captain Beefheart, among others. Billboard.com reports he turned down the chance to act as the Doors' lawyer because the group wanted him to work for them exclusively.
Kant was also was an accomplished gambler - he won the World Series of Poker in 1987.
