FRANZ FERDINAND STAR MISSES GIG AS WIFE GOES INTO LABOUR

British rockers FRANZ FERDINAND played at a secret gig at the site of legendary U.K. music festival Glastonbury without their drummer PAUL THOMPSON - because his wife had gone into labour.

The band were due to headline the annual event on Friday (19Sep08), which raises funds for villages in the surrounding area of Somerset, but were forced to swap their slot with pop duo The Ting Tings after Thompson stayed with his wife as she gave birth.

They went on to play a smaller acoustic set at the site before being helped out by session drummers.

But despite the setback, the group members were pleased for their bandmate, with frontman Alex Kapranos excitedly telling the crowd the rocker had become a father to a baby boy.

He said, "I don't know if you've heard about Paul our drummer - his wife went into labour, then 20 minutes ago we heard she'd given birth to a baby boy."
