Rockers ELBOW have scooped this year's (08) Mercury Music Prize for their album THE SELDOM SEEN KID.
The result was a triumph for the group, whose debut album Asleep At The Wheel was nominated for the coveted British award in 2001.
The rockers were among the bookmakers' favourites to win and they beat off competition from a shortlist of 11 other albums, which included teenage folk singer Laura Marling's Alas I Cannot Swim, In Rainbows by Radiohead, and hip-hop sensation Estelle's Shine.
As Elbow collected the award at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Tuesday (09Sep08), singer Guy Garvey said: "I know I'm supposed to be cool and say something coy, but this truly is the best thing that's ever happened to us."
The Mercury Prize is awarded to the "most accomplished album" of the previous 12 months, as decided by a panel of music industry experts.
Previous winners have included Primal Scream (Screamadelica), Portishead (Dummy), Badly Drawn Boy (The Hour of Bewilderbeast), Dizzee Rascal (Boy in Da Corner) and Franz Ferdinand (Franz Ferdinand). Last year's (07) Mercury Music Prize winner was the Klaxons' Myths of The Near Future.
