WINEHOUSE PERFORMS AT RAINY FESTIVAL

AMY WINEHOUSE played her last scheduled gig of the year (08) at British music festival Bestival this weekend (beg05Sep08) - despite torrential rain that forced several other acts to cancel.

The troubled star showed up 40 minutes late and was welcomed by a mixture of cheers and boos from the crowd of thousands as she headlined the event on the Isle of Wight in England on Saturday (06Sep08).

She performed hit tracks You Know I'm No Good and Rehab but her late arrival meant she had to cut her 80-minute slot in half.

Singer Grace Jones also made a surprise appearance on Saturday with a rain-sodden set, as did reformed ska act The Specials, who played their first gig in 27 years.

Revellers' spirits had been dampened on Friday (05Sep08) after a three-hour downpour forced organisers to close the BBC Introducing Stage, thereby cancelling sets from Sam Sparro, Lykke Li and Black Kids.

But festival chief Rob da Bank remained adamant the outdoor event had its highlights.

Da Bank tells NME.com, "Obviously people are going to moan about the rain but I've been to enough muddy (legendary British music festival) Glastonburys to know that things always come good in the end.

"I've had loads of people come up to me and say this is actually the best Bestival they've ever been to. Onwards and upwards!"
