Singer JEWEL founded charity group Project Clean Water after experiencing the problems poverty-stricken people in the Third World suffer from while living in her car.
The newlywed singer formed the organisation with her brother to help fund and build wells and clean-water resources in the poorest areas of the world.
And her own tough background inspired her to get active.
Jewel, who lived in her car as she was attempting to make a living as a musician in Los Angeles, says, "When I was homeless I had bad kidneys and couldn't afford clean water."
In 11 years, her charity has funded 35 wells in 15 countries, according to U.S. magazine American Cowboy.
