Mike Skinner of The Streets performing at Wakestock Festival 2008 - Day Three, held at at Blenheim Palace, Oxford, England - 29.06.08

The British rapper was so tormented by making his fourth album, Everything Is Borrowed, that he scrapped more than a dozen songs.

And he even wrote a track about a donkey before finally going back to basics to complete the disc.

The Fit But You Know It hitmaker tells music magazine NME, "I probably threw away more music than is on the album now.

"But the album is a product of all the stuff I threw away, it was important to the album.

"There was a song about a donkey that got eradicated!"

Skinner, whose new album is released next month (Sept08), plans to abandon sampling on his next record and use only real musicians.

He adds, "It's no different to what I normally do, really, it just costs a bit more, but I can't delegate anything - I'm a control freak, but in a nice way."

The rapper also promises to stick to his pledge to retire from music after his fifth record, adding: "Maybe when I'm 40 and broke I might come back, but that all feels a bit pants."

She tells Britain's New Magazine, "I do think they could have waited a bit. If they want a worldwide hit I have them all up here (pointing to her beehive).

"I guess they are going for clean-cut and boring. When I do release mine - and I am tempted to do it on the same day - this would be the bigger hit. If they change their minds I'm waiting!"

WARWICK AND GAYNOR PAY TRIBUTE TO HAYES
LATEST: Singers DIONNE WARWICK and GLORIA GAYNOR are the latest stars to pay tribute to ISAAC HAYES, who died on Sunday (10Aug08).

DIONNE WARWICK and GLORIA GAYNOR

In a statement, Warwick describes Hayes as "family" and revealed that he had written her 1979 hit song Déjà Vu as a birthday present for her.

She says, "I've lost one of my best buddies and it is not easy to reckon with."

"I know one can never put a question mark where God puts a period, so I will not question the almighty's decision to call him home. We all know when that call comes we all will answer. Personally, my buddy will be missed for many reasons by me. He was 'family'.

"He will be a part of my musical life each time I sing the song 'Déjà Vu', as this was a birthday gift to me from him. His renditions of songs that I had recorded, especially 'Walk On By', in my opinion 'the definitive version', will always be another memory each time I sing it, and the humorous side that he showed few (that I knew so well).

"My family and I send sincere heartfelt condolences to his family for their enormous loss, and we will hold them in continuous prayer."

And disco singer Gloria Gaynor, who recorded one of Barry White's songs, You're The First, The Last, My Everything, for Hayes in 1985, was full of admiration for the soul legend.

She described Hayes as "a gentleman and an extremely warm and talented artist", who she "respected and admired".

LOS ANGELES INDIE-POP UNIT ARMY NAVY SET TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM
The Album is set to release on October 14, 2008 on The Fever Zone.

image hosted by SuperPhotoSpace.com

Essentially, the music of Army Navy can be best described as impeccably crafted melody over blankets of guitar fuzz that creates a delicate balance between melancholy and joyful resignation. This Los Angeles band looks to groups from the past such as Teenage Fanclub, The Smiths, The Posies and The Libertines for inspiration while keeping a firm eye on the future. Set for an October 14, 2008 release, the debut album will be issued on the bands own The Fever Zone record label and features a wondrous mix of modern power-pop playfulness and timeless Brit-pop elegance consistently through its 12 tracks. Produced by Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Yo La Tengo, etc.), the album is a never-ending barrage of touchstones from a band that references the past at every corner of the record yet is forging new musical pathways with every song they pen.

image hosted by SuperPhotoSpace.com

After co-fronting the band Pinwheel with Death Cab for Cuties Ben Gibbard, Army Navy frontman Justin Kennedy moved out to Los Angeles to seek out his own assemblage of dedicated musicians. Through the relentless word-of-mouth received from Kennedys demos, a final line-up was eventually formed, which includes Louie Schultz (Guitars, Keyboards, Vocals), Benjamin Gaffin (Bass), and Doug Randall (Drums, Vocals).

image hosted by SuperPhotoSpace.com

Gearing up for this release, along with having an exclusive track being featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming hilarious film "Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist" (starring Michael Cera), Army Navy are poised to bring their music to as many willing listeners as possible. From the sweet, infectious jangle of Saints to the sweeping gracefulness of Unresponsive Ears, a song seemingly ripped out of Mozs countless songbooks, Army Navy is an amazing recital filled with equal parts purpose and merriment.

STILLER MORTIFIED BY SPIELBERG RAGE
BEN STILLER is still haunted by the memory of upsetting STEVEN SPIELBERG as a child actor - when he called cut on a lengthy EMPIRE OF THE SUN scene after messing up his lines.

STEVEN SPIELBERG and BEN STILLER

The funnyman wasn't laughing when mild-mannered Spielberg took him to task for making a directorial decision on the set - when he was nothing more than a young extra.

He recalls, "There was a long steady cam shot, where a young Christian Bale is coming into this American barracks.

"He walks through the whole barracks and gets to the end of the barracks and there's John Malkovich and Joe Pantoliano and me. It's a six-minute shot... and then I screwed up my line.

"I said, `Oh whoops, sorry. Maybe we should cut.' Steven Spielberg is in another building watching on the monitors and I just hear silence. Then I hear him: `What happened?'

"I'm like, `I just yelled cut because I screwed up,' and he's yelling, `No, no, you never cut!' I literally turned white and shrunk because my hero and idol, Steven Spielberg, is yelling at me.

"I learned you never yell cut as an actor. The director yells cut. For years I lived with this shame... but we've laughed about it since because he remembers it too. I was mortified."

BLACK TERRIFIED OF JUNGLE CENTIPEDE
JACK BLACK suffered through new movie TROPIC THUNDER with bruised ribs - but the pain was nothing compared to the fear of an arthropod attack.

JACK BLACK

The funnyman admits stories of a killer, man-eating centipede led to many nervous hours as Black and his castmates and crew waded through the jungles of Hawaii, where the film was shot.

He admits, "There are creepy crawlies in there and apparently they got real dangerous centipedes. You think it's gonna be a fun video game but real centipedes, if they bite you, it's like getting shot with a bullet; it's that painful!

"You can try to control the jungle but no one could clear all the centipedes. The nooks and crannies, where they hide, are impossible to find."

But at least his centipede fear took his mind off his breathing troubles on the set.

Black explains, "On the very first day of shooting I was carrying the biggest gun and I had to be running, shooting, diving with the gun and I landed funny on the gun and I heard something pop.

"I bruised my rib and you know how that goes; if you get a rib bruise it lasts for about six weeks of not being able to breathe all the way in. It's such a drag."

CASSIE ASHAMED OF MESSY FILM DEBUT
R+B stunner CASSIE VENTURA regrets not taking more acting classes before starring in STEP UP 2: THE STREETS - because her performance was 'a mess'.

Cassie and Briana Evigan in Touchstone Pictures' STEP UP 2 THE STREETS.

The singer jumped at the chance to score her first major movie role in the film, but now wishes she had waited for a part she could have been better prepared for.

She says, "I don't think I took enough classes. Reacting to five other people is completely different than being with an acting coach."

And she recalls the embarrassment of almost maiming a co-star when the task of driving and remembering her lines left her more than a little confused.

She tells Complex magazine, "I'm a horrible driver and my first day on set I had to drive a car and act at the same time. I was thinking about too many things at once... I almost ran over the girl that I was talking to. It was just a mess."

Synopsis: Professor Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid) might be imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed and an intellectual giant – but when it comes to solving the conundrums of love and family, he's as downright flummoxed as the next guy. His teenaged daughter (Ellen Page) is an acid-tongued overachiever who follows all too closely in dad's misery-loving footsteps, and his adopted, preposterously ne'er-do-well brother (Thomas Haden Church) has perfected the art of freeloading. A widower who can't seem to find passion in anything anymore, not even the Victorian Literature in which he's an expert, it seems Lawrence is sleepwalking through a very stunted middle age. When his brother shows up unexpectedly for an extended stay at just about the same time as he accidentally encounters his former student Janet (Sarah Jessica Parker), the circumstances cause him to stir from his deep, deep freeze, with often comical, sometimes heartbreaking, consequences for himself and everyone around him.

HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER

Cast: America Ferrera, Elizabeth Pena, Jorge Cervera, Lucy Gallardo, Steven Bauer

Synopsis: What does female desire look like? And how do self-inflicted limitations and social expectations shade and color it? In her tenderly comic, richly textured feature debut, Georgina Garcia Riedel lovingly explores the terrain of longing, loneliness, and self-realization among three generations of single women in a Mexican American family as they grapple with romantic drought.
As sweltering summer stretches over a sun-bleached Arizona border town, Doña Genoveva (Lucy Gallardo), the Garcia family matriarch, decides to buy a car. The only catch is that she doesn't know how to drive. When she enlists Don Pedro's pedagogical skills, sparks begin to fly--at her house and beyond. Her daughter, Lolita, played with deadpan poignancy by Elizabeth Peña, seems to have hit a dry spell until things start to sizzle at the butcher shop where she works. Meanwhile, Lolita's teenage daughter, Blanca, a radiant America Ferrera (REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES), engineers an awakening all her own. It's as if the languid heat wave has thawed everyone's defenses and jump-started a sexual revolution.
Like the folks in the story, Riedel's camera never hurries, savoring the poetic vistas and lazy rhythms of the rural Southwest without resorting to sentimentality. Her three heroines are utterly human--full of idiosyncrasies and unexpected charms. In each of them is a distinctive, newly discovered sensuality, an engine that drives them forward, kicking up dust as they go.

BRAND UPON THE BRAIN

This eerie excursion into the Gothic recesses of Maddin’s mad, imaginary childhood is a silent, black-and-white comic science-fiction nightmare set in a lighthouse on grim Black Notch Island, where fictional protagonist Guy Maddin was raised by an ironfisted, puritanical mother. Originally mounted as a theatrical event (accompanied by live orchestra, Foley artists, and assorted narrators), Brand upon the Brain! is an irreverent, delirious trip into the mind of one of current cinema’s true eccentrics.

WATCHING THE DETECTIVES
