The comic, real name Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, passed away on Saturday (09Aug08) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois after losing his battle with pneumonia.

The star was admitted to hospital on 24 July (08) where he was diagnosed with the infection and immediately placed on a ventilator.

His sister-in-law, Mary Ann Grossett, tells People.com, "He told his wife (non-verbally) that he could breathe on his own, and he wanted the ventilator out. He motioned that he wanted it out. He had sarcoidosis (lung disease), but it was in remission.

"But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection... He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that's where the pneumonia came from."

Doctors kept the star sedated. He was conscious at times but contracted a second strain of pneumonia while in the hospital.

Grossett adds, "He was critically ill when he was in the hospital. He was in intensive care the whole time."
