RAMSAY SWIMS TO SAFETY AFTER CLIFF PLUNGE IN ICELAND

Celebrity chef GORDON RAMSAY had to swim for his life after slipping off a cliff and plunging into the freezing waters off Iceland during a recent TV shoot.

Gordon Ramsay prepares for the opening of his new restaurant "Gordon Ramsay at the London West Hollywood", Los Angeles, California - 04.06.08 The fiery Brit was shooting an episode of his The F Word series when a puffin hunt turned into a rescue operation for his crew.

Ramsay was clambering up a cliff when he lost his footing and fell into the sea below.

The 41-year-old chef tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "I thought I was a goner. They say cats have nine lives. I've had 12 already and I don't know how many more I'll have.

"I remember thinking, 'Oh f**k!' My boots and my waterproofs were dragging me down.

"I'm an extremely good swimmer, but I couldn't get to the surface. I was panicking and my lungs were filling with water."

Quick-thinking Ramsay survived by removing his heavy boots and floating to the surface.

He adds, "I was dazed and my head was totally numb."

Ramsay's TV crew then threw him a rope and towed him to safety. The chef was treated for a cut on his leg at a local hospital.

He says, "It wasn't until I was on the plane home I realised what a close call I'd had."
