PERRY GREW UP WITHOUT MTV + POP MUSIC

U.S. pop sensation KATY PERRY had such a strict religious upbringing she wasn't even allowed to watch MTV.

The I Kissed A Girl hitmaker now appears on the cable music channel on a daily basis, but she was banned from watching the network when she was a child.

The middle child of two deeply traditional pastors, Perry tells EW.com she wasn't allowed to listen to any kind of non-religious music, and Madonna videos were definitely a no-no.

She says, "MTV and VH1 were permanently blocked on our television."

But the pop star insists she has no hard feelings about her religious past, and even had a Jesus figure tattooed on her wrist to remind her of her restricted youth.

She explains, "I got this Jesus tattoo on my wrist when I was 18, because I know that it's (religion) always going to be a part of me.

"When I'm playing, it's staring right back at me, saying, 'Remember where you came from.'"
