Security was so tight at singer BILLY JOEL's New York concert this weekend (begs18Jul08), the star's own undercover security officers were reportedly denied admission to the event.
Eight undercover guards for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) assigned to police Joel's final concert at the city's infamous Shea Stadium on Friday (18Jul08) were allegedly turned away from the concert.
The group, part of a 12-member team from the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTFF), routinely works at high-profile events considered potential terrorist targets.
Agents were permitted to enter the venue only after higher-ranking officers intervened, according to the New York Post.
A source tells the newspaper, "They showed up. They were told they were not getting credentials. It's a big public event and a big terrorist target.
"There were meetings leading up to it where they discussed the personnel numbers. They were supposed to get 12 passes."
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department blames an internal miscommunication for the mix-up, insisting the quota for the additional security detail was cut to four agents.
Meanwhile an FBI spokesperson has declined to comment.
Once the federal security was allowed in, Joel began his history-making concert, singing with guests including former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey.
