There has been a mistake on the previous post. The title should be 'Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson' instead of 'Gonzo: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson.'. The movie will hit theaters July 4, 2008 (Limited).
Director: Alex Gibney
Cast: Johnny Depp, Jimmy Carter, George McGovern, Pat Buchanan, Jann Wenner
Synopsis: “Gonzo” is the definitive film biography of a mythic American figure, a man that Tom Wolfe called our “greatest comic writer,” whose suicide, by gunshot, led Rolling Stone Magazine, where Thompson began his career, to devote an entire issue (its best-selling ever) to the man that launched a thousand sips of bourbon, endless snorts of cocaine and a brash, irreverent, fearless style of journalism - named “gonzo” after an anarchic blues riff by James Booker.
Borrowing from Kris Kristofferson, Thompson was a “walking contradiction, partly truth, mostly fiction.” A die-hard member of the NRA, he was also a coke-snorting, whiskey-swilling, acid-eating fiend. While his pen dripped with venom for crooked politicians, he surprised nervous visitors with the courtly manners and soft-spoken delivery of a Southern gentleman. Careening out of control in his personal life, Thompson also maintained a steel-eyed conviction about righting wrongs. Today, in a time, when “spin” has replaced the search for deeper meaning, Thompson remains an iconic crusader for truth, justice and a fiercely idealistic American way. Like Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (and the movie made from it) remains a wanderlust myth for generation after generation of American youth. And for America’s most esteemed journalists – from Tom Wolfe, and Walter Isaacson (former editor of Time) to the NY Times’ Frank Rich – he remains an iconic freelance, never afraid to gore every sacred cow in his path. He believed that writing could make a difference. It could change things.
GONZO is directed by Alex Gibney, the Academy Award nominated director of Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room and the director of the Academy Award winning documentary, Taxi to the Dark Side. While Gibney shaped the screen story, every narrated word in the film springs from the typewriters of Thompson himself. Those words are given life by Johnny Depp, the actor who once shadowed Thompson’s every move for the screen version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and who bankrolled Thompson’s spectacular funeral (photographed for this film) in which the good doctor’s ashes were fired from a rocket launcher mounted with a towering two-thumbed fist whose palm held a giant peyote button.
This two-year effort was produced by an extraordinary team, including Gibney; Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair; the indie producing team of Jason Kliot and Joana Vicente; Eva Orner and Alison Ellwood. Ellwood, an extraordinarily creative editor, was also Gibney’s collaborator on Enron. The film’s Director of Photography was Maryse Alberti.
The film is distinguished by its unprecedented cooperation of Thompson’s friends, family and estate. The filmmakers had access to hundreds of photographs and over 200 hours of audiotapes, home movies and documentary footage of the man. In addition, the estate granted unusual access to the work itself, allowing the film to quote from unpublished manuscripts, as well as the many letters, books and articles that Thompson produced. Ralph Steadman – the visionary artist whose ink-splattered drawings and paintings created a subversively iconic visual landscape for Thompson’s words – also granted the filmmakers access to previously unpublished artworks and Polaroid’s.
The signature of the film, however, is its focus on Thompson’s work, particularly his most provocative and productive period from 1965 to 1975. His wicked words resonate today, at a time when politicians have become manufactured celebrities, shrouding themselves in Teflon, issuing banalities whose only value is that they rarely offend. Too often, contemporary journalists play the politicians’ game, taking them seriously with a balance they don’t deserve. Thompson never stood for that. He understood, better than any other, that when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Eccentric singer/songwriter TOM WAITS was shocked when a police officer joined him on stage at a gig in Texas, and presented him with an official key to the state's City of El Paso.
The Downtown Train star was playing an intimate set at El Paso's Plaza Theatre on Thursday (26Jun08) when a female officer approached the singer on stage.
And Waits thought it was a joke - telling the officer: "I paid all those tickets," and quipping, "She was dead when I got there."
However, the policewoman, Susie Boyd, hadn't come to arrest the star - she was there to award him the city's official key and a plaque of recognition.
And the usually downbeat singer was seemingly moved by the presentation, telling fans, "This is a first for me, a real first."

AMERICAN IDOL star BLAKE LEWIS is refusing to quit the music business after he was dropped by his label Arista Records - insisting it's 'no biggy'.
The season six runner-up was axed from the label's books after disappointing sales of his debut album Audio Day Dream last year (07) - which sold approximately 300,000 copies in the U.S.
Lewis joins a string of former contestants of the U.S. hit talent contest to be dropped - Idol winners Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard and fellow runner-up Katherine McPhee have all been dumped by Arista.
He writes on his MySpace blog, "Ring, ring, ring went the phone. Iain my manager baring the news. Arista isn't picking up the second option. Meaning, I'm not doing another record with them. I'm totally fine with this.
"I guess the right time was now. No biggy."
But Lewis remains optimistic about the music corporation's decision, because he will be kept busy with a host of other recording projects.
He adds, "I'm still with 19 Recordings and I got a tour and new record on the way."

Hip-hop mogul SHAWN 'JAY-Z' CARTER has laughed off any talk of entering politics - insisting he'd be assassinated if he ever tried to run for president.
Jay-Z arrives at the Ed Sullivan Theater for the 'Late Show with David Letterman', New York City, USA - 31.03.08
The 99 Problems star has expanded his business empire to include music publishing, clothing and alcohol - as well as owning shares in basketball team the New Jersey Nets.
But he has dismissed the idea of turning his attentions to politics and the state of America, because he would face heavy criticism over his personal life and criminal history.
And he compares it to the backlash U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama experienced when his pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, was forced to step down from his White House campaign after making several controversial comments about 9/11 and Black America earlier this year (08).
Asked by London's Time Out magazine whether he'd ever stand for office, the rapper jokes, "No, they'll kill me in 30 seconds. 'S**t! This guy's in!' Bang! Ha ha! I won't make it past the primaries!
"They talk about Obama's priest - imagine what they'd do to me!"
Jay-Z has a criminal record from an incident in 1999, when he was accused of stabbing record executive Lance 'Un' Rivera. He denied the charge and reached a plea with prosecutors, which resulted in the star pleading guilty to a misdemeanour and sentenced to three years' probation.

Concert promoter Live Nation has dismissed reports they are struggling to shift tickets to MADONNA's forthcoming world tour - stating fans have turned out in record numbers for a chance to see the superstar in concert.
Madonna arrive at 2008 Tribeca Film Festival - Premiere of 'I Am Because We Are' at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Centre,New York City, USA - 24.04.08
However, reports in the New York Post suggested the singer was struggling to entice fans to see her Sticky + Sweet tour, with tickets failing to sell-out at certain venues.
But Live Nation refutes the claims, insisting over one million fans have already bought tickets to see the Material Girl star perform.
And the company is so sure they have a hit on their hands, they have announced that Madonna is set to smash her own record for the highest earning touring female artist - looking set to earn $55 million (GBP27.5 million) more than she did for her 2006 Confessions On A Dancefloor tour.
The healthy ticket sales for Madonna's tour allows the company to sigh a breath of relief after facing a barrage of speculation this month (Jun08) over whether they had overpaid to sign certain artists.
As well working in partnership with Madonna, Live Nation has signed groundbreaking multi-million tour and promotion deals with rockers U2 and hip hop heavyweight Jay-Z.

Funnyman MIKE MYERS wasn't laughing at the recent THE LOVE GURU premiere in Australia - he was battling diarrhoea on the red carpet.
The actor realised he was ill on his way to the screening earlier this month (Jun08) and had to stop at a number of restaurants to use restrooms before he actually got to the premiere.
But his embarrassment didn't end there - he then had to try to hide his upset stomach from a fan at a pharmacy counter.
He explains, "In Australia, when you go into a drug store you actually have to talk to the pharmacist... I was looking around and I was, like, 'Hi!' 'Hello, you're Mike Myers, how are you? What can I do for you?'"
"(I said) 'I'd like Pepto-Bismol please.' 'We don't know what that is... What is it exactly, Mike?' I was like, 'It's for tummy trouble.'"
But the confused Aussie staffmember at the pharmacy needed him to be more specific, prompting a desperate Myers to reveal he was suffering from diarrhoea.
He adds, "(They said) 'How very interesting, you're a superstar with diarrhoea.' I'm like, 'Hmmm, don't feel like a superstar right now.'"

The pregnant actress phoned in to radio host Gerry House's WSIX-FM show from her car to compliment her husband Keith Urban on his skills as a father-to-be, and when the DJ asked the Aussie to pick up a salad for him she obliged.

She said, "Keith has been doing Lamaze lessons, he is selling himself short... He has been very good at it."
Kidman added she was on her way to the radio station to pick her husband up but she was stuck in traffic, prompting cheeky House to serve up his lunch order.

One of America's most revered film critics has started championing HEATH LEDGER for a posthumous Oscar in his review of the tragic actor's final completed film.
In his critique of The Dark Knight, Rolling Stone's Peter Travers calls Ledger's portrayal of The Joker "mad-crazy-blazing brilliant." He goes on to write, "It's typical of Ledger's total commitment to films as diverse as Brokeback Mountain and I'm Not There that he does nothing out of vanity or the need to be liked.
"Ledger's Joker has no gray areas - he's all rampaging id. He creates a Joker for the ages."
Ledger, who died from an accidental drug overdose in January (08), takes on The Joker role which Jack Nicholson portrayed in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film. The Dark Knight hits cinema screens next month (Jul08).
And Travers in convinced Ledger is bound for Oscar gold: "If there's a movement to get him the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch won for 1976's Network, sign me up."

Rapper COMMON has been forced to reconsider his rule about tattoos on women after co-starring with ANGELINA JOLIE in new action film WANTED.
The Chicago-born star isn't a fan of skin art and has always insisted his assistant keeps her tattoos to a minimum.
But then he met Jolie, who proved once and for all that tattooed women can be classy.
He tells WENN, "I have told my female assistant not to get too many tattoos because I tell her she'll still want to look ladylike.
"That may sound old fashioned, but you want to be in a dress and still look ladylike.
"I understand that people use them for expression. Angelina still looks like a lady and she got a lot of tattoos, so I guess my point got broke down when my assistant mentioned that."

The members of session music supergroup THE WRECKING CREW were honoured in Los Angeles on Wednesday (25Jun08) when studio stars GLEN CAMPBELL, HAL BLAINE and DON RANDI sank their hands in concrete at Hollywood's RockWalk.
The trio were part of the group that played behind the likes of Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and the Papas and The Monkees on hundreds of smash hits.
The Wrecking Crew were also largely responsible for giving music mogul Phil Spector his fabled Wall of Sound.
Drummer Hal Blaine told those gathered for the RockWalk induction that he had played with "the greatest musicians in the world" as a member of the session group.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member performed on hits like Strangers in the Night and Good Vibrations as a member of The Wrecking Crew.
Meanwhile, country icon Campbell admitted he still regrets the day he left The Wrecking Crew to embark on a solo career.
He said, "I wanted to stay and play with the musicians. It was what I really enjoyed doing, more so than singing."
