JACKSON DROPS LAWSUIT AGAINST ACCOUNTANTS
Pop superstar MICHAEL JACKSON has dropped a lawsuit against an accounting firm he accused of making deals and hiring people without his permission.

MICHAEL JACKSON

The Thriller hitmaker filed papers against Bernstein, Fox, Whitman, Goldman and Sloan in December 2006 alleging negligence and breach of fiduciary duty.

The lawsuit accused the firm of late tax payments on his behalf, failing to file workers' compensation payments on his behalf in 2004 and 2005, as well as hiring people and entering into contracts without his authorisation.

The company subsequently counter-sued Jackson, claiming the singer owed nearly $1 million (GBP500,000) in unpaid fees.

The star's action has now been dismissed.

DOHERTY TO BE RELEASED EARLY
Troubled rocker PETE DOHERTY has been granted early release from prison - he will walk free on Tuesday (06May08).

PETE DOHERTY

The Babyshambles frontman was jailed for 14 weeks last month (Apr08) for "breach of time-keeping, non-compliance of his order and using different drugs".

But the star is now set to be released after serving just 28 days of his sentence - which has been halved and a further 18 days deducted as part of a scheme introduced last summer (07) to ease prison overcrowding. He also gets another two days taken off for time spent in police custody.

Doherty was forced to postpone a solo show at London's Royal Albert Hall on 26 April (08) and scrap his appearance at the Love Music Hate Racism benefit in the British capital on 27 April (08).

But his release means his planned performance at Britain's famous Glastonbury Festival in June (08) should go ahead as planned.

NEW BID TO BAN SNOOP DOGG FROM U.K.
LATEST: The British government has launched a new bid in order to prevent rapper SNOOP DOGG from entering the country - after a judge overturned two previous attempts to ban him from the U.K.

SNOOP DOGG

The star - real name Calvin Broadus Jr. - was prohibited from entering Britain after he was involved in a brawl at Heathrow Airport in April 2006.

The ruling was overturned earlier this year (Jan08) and Britain's Border Agency had a subsequent appeal against the ruling turned down by an immigration judge last month (Apr08).

However, the British Home Office has now filed a second appeal to challenge the decision - putting the star's proposed U.K tour later this year (08) into jeopardy.

A spokesperson for the agency insist they will not give up the fight to keep Broadus out of the country, saying, "We will continue to oppose entry to the U.K. of individuals where we believe there may be a risk to the public."

The Sk8ter Boi hitmaker, whose U.S. tour has been plagued by poor ticket sales, called in sick ahead of the show at Cox Arena on Wednesday evening (30Apr08).

Fans were left fuming, insisting the singer didn't give them enough notice of the cancellation as many had already made the journey to the venue by the time the news broke.

Lavigne has subsequently cancelled appearances on U.S. TV show Tonight With Jay Leno and on Ryan Seacrest's Los Angeles radio show - citing ill health.

And she has now issued a statement on her website, apologising to fans for the scrapped gig.

She says, "I am at home right now taking it easy. I have been sick this whole tour, and now I have lost my voice. I have never canceled a show in my whole career and just had to for the first time ever. This sux (sic)!

" I just played 4 shows in a row in Texas (which is a lot for the vocals) and woke up in Vegas Tuesday with no voice. I thought I was gonna have to cancel that show, but I made it through…..barely! I woke up yesterday and knew I wouldn't be able to sing last night. My voice is so shot.

"I'm at home resting my voice for 2 days and hope to be back out soon. Thank you for understanding. And once again, I sincerely apologise."

BARAT SLAMS COLDPLAY'S MUSIC GIVEAWAY
DIRTY PRETTY THINGS star CARL BARAT has criticised British rockers COLDPLAY for giving away their latest single for free - insisting the move is bad for the music industry.

CARL BARAT of Dirty Pretty Things

The Yellow hitmakers gave fans the chance to download their new track, Violet Hill, for free from their official website earlier this week (begs28Apr08).

Coldplay follow in the footsteps of artists including Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails who have also allowed music lovers to sample their music without paying.

But Barat is convinced that when high profile bands give their music away, it makes it much harder for lesser-known musicians for make a living.

He says, "You could say they (Coldplay) were jumping on the bandwagon a bit. You can't escape the fact that big name, big money bands who release their stuff for free are harming the scene.

"The industry is struggling financially and this is like missile after missile. How do new bands compete?"

THE BEATLES' COMPANY FLOUNDERING WITHOUT ASPINALL
THE BEATLES' company Apple Corps is reportedly suffering following the loss of the band's business manager NEIL ASPINALL who died of cancer last month (Apr08).
Aspinall was at the helm of the group's business empire from 1968 until his retirement last year (07).

And now Apple Corps has reportedly failed to crack down on a string of illegal sales of the band's work, amid rumours the company is failing to cope without Aspinall's expertise.

A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "Neil Aspinall had a reputation for keeping his eye on the ball when it came to protecting the band's interests.

"But there's a worry Apple has really taken its eye off the ball of late, as there are a number of essentially bootlegged products using The Beatles' music and film footage being sold in the shops and on the internet.

"The feeling is Apple really needs to get its act together."

POITIER USED HIS LATE FATHER AS A SCRIPT ADVISOR
Legendary actor SIDNEY POITIER only starred in movies his father would approve of, even long after his dad died.

SIDNEY POITIER

The Oscar winner stuck true to the family values his parents instilled in him, even when it meant persuading movie bosses to alter a scene in 1967 film In the Heat of the Night - so when his character is slapped, he slaps his attacker back.

The 81-year-old says, "(The scene) almost was not there. I said, 'I'll tell you what, I'll make this movie for you if you give me your absolute guarantee when he slaps me I slap him right back and you guarantee that it will play in every version of this movie.'

"And they thought about it and they said, 'Yes, we'll guarantee that.'

"I try not to do things that are against nature. I stayed away from films that didn't speak well of my values. I could only say yes to films if I passed it by my dad.

"I passed it by my father because I did not want ever to make a film that would not reflect positively on my father's life."

Poitier's new book Life Beyond Measure: Letters to My Great Granddaughter tells the actor's story of his struggle to beat the odds in Hollywood, eventually becoming the first black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1963.
