PJ PROBY QUIZZED OVER FRAUD CLAIMS

Sixties pop star PJ PROBY has protested his innocence in a police investigation for benefit fraud, insisting the accusations against him have been fabricated.

The American Hold Me singer/actor, who is now living in a $1.2 million (GBP600,000) mansion in Britain, is alleged to have claimed $100,000 (GBP50,000) of state benefits while still receiving payments for roadshows.

The 69-year-old - real name James Marcus Smith - is currently being investigated by the U.K. government's Department for Work and Pensions for the scam - but the one-time pal of Elvis Presley is adamant his name will be cleared.

He says, "I don't know anything about any benefit fraud. There's nothing in these allegations."

Smith's home in Worcestershire, England, was raided last July (07) after allegations of fraud arose, but details of the incident have just emerged.
