CARPENTERS FANS DEVASTATED BY DEMOLITION PLANS

Fans of music legends THE CARPENTERS have launched a campaign to save the duo's former home from redevelopment.

Current owners Manuel and Blanca Melendez Parra have submitted plans to build a new home to officials in Downey, California, where the five-bedroom house once lived in by Karen and Richard Carpenter stands.

The pair are tired of fans converging on the iconic residence, which was was featured on the cover of 1973 album Now + Then, and was owned by the Carpenter family until 1997.

The Parras' daughter Jessica says, "In the beginning, we let everybody in. But honestly, it became horrible, not only for us but for the neighbourhood.

"People peek in windows and take pictures. They leave flowers on the front porch."

But fan Jon Konjoyan is hopeful his campaign to save the historical house will succeed.

He explains, "This house is our version of Graceland. When they photographed the Now + Then cover here in 1973, the house was instantly immortalised.

"They were such a huge American act in the 70s. So many people loved them."

Officials in Downey have confirmed they have received plans for a new home on the site, but have not yet issued a demolition permit.
