MADONNA'S POVERTY-STRICKEN DANCING DAYS

Pop superstar MADONNA is pleased she didn't pursue a career as a pole dancer - despite a monthly struggle to pay her rent.

The singer, who grew up in Detroit, Michigan, moved to New York in 1977 in the hope of finding fame.

And despite struggling to make a living before her big break in 1982, Madonna is pleased she didn't resort to performing in seedy establishments.

She says, "If I look back to the beginning of my career I can recall those moments of struggle like it was yesterday.

"The cold harsh reality when I arrived in New York (was) to find that there were thousands of girls that wanted to do the same thing, and I wasn't so special after all - that I was never going to be able to pay the rent ... and that I was going to have to do other things to feed myself.

"I didn't resort to pole dancing - I did other things."
