MADONNA SHINES AT CHARITY PARTY
Stars including DREW BARRYMORE, TOM CRUISE and DEMI MOORE turned out for MADONNA's lavish charity party in New York on Wednesday (06Feb08) night.

The event at the United Nations building, which was co-hosted by fashion house Gucci, was held to raise money for UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and Madonna's Raising Malawi Orphan Care Initiative.
Celebrities paid between $2,500 (GBP3,250) and $10,000 (GBP5,000) to attend the soiree which was presented by comedian Chris Rock and featured performances from Rihanna, Timbaland and Alicia Keys.
The party included a lavish auction which saw Tom Cruise bid $100,000 (GBP50,000) for a sports package that included the privilege of hanging out at Yankee Stadium with Alex Rodriguez and a private hour playing soccer with David Beckham, but the actor lost out to a bidder who pledged $350,000 (GBP175,000).
However, Cruise, who attended with his wife Katie Holmes, didn't let the disappointment ruin his evening and praised Madonna for her efforts.
He says, "It was an extraordinary evening. The whole evening was quite moving," adding the event was "an absolute necessity".
And the singer herself urged other stars to follow her lead and do more to help good causes.
She says, "I've earned a reputation for many things: pushing the envelope, for being a provocateur, for never taking no for an answer. For endlessly reinventing myself, for being a cult member, a kidnapper.
"For being ambitious, outrageous and irreverent. And for never settling for second best.
"But I don't just want you to write me a check. I'm more interested in your heart. I want to take you on that journey with me tonight. I want you to feel as inspired as I do right now," she said. "Yes, I want to raise Malawi. But if I can do that - if we can do that - then the sky's the limit."

Hollywood actress KIRSTEN DUNST has become the latest star to reportedly check into rehab - joining the same Utah medical facility as EVA MENDES.

According to U.S. magazine Star, the 25-year-old was admitted to Cirque Lodge after a week of wild partying at last month's (Jan08) Sundance Film Festival.
The facility is also the same centre where Lindsay Lohan spent last summer (07) for substance abuse problems.
A source tells Star, "She (Dunst) desperately needed help. She seemed to be intoxicated when she checked in because she was acting really erratic. She was extremely emotional, constantly breaking down in tears.
"She not in a good place right now, but thankfully, she's getting the help she needs."
Dunst recently dismissed rumours she was on the verge of a breakdown after reports surfaced of her alleged "erratic" behaviour at Sundance, with sources claiming her "odd" antics left friends apologising to other partygoers. But representatives for the Spider-Man star denied the reports insisting, "Kirsten is fine."

PARENTS FEAR FOR SPEARS' LIFE
BRITNEY SPEARS' parents have accused hospital officials of putting their daughter's life at risk by releasing her back into the public.

Jamie and Lynne Spears are "extremely disappointed" the singer was discharged from the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday (06Feb08).
The star had been undergoing psychiatric treatment at the hospital since last Thursday (31Jan08), but was released just three days after doctors told the family they'd be keeping Spears for 14 days to carry out further tests.
And now the couple have voiced their anger at the decision to let their daughter go home early, insisting the 26-year-old's life currently hangs in the balance as she still needs urgent medical help.
They also appealed to the courts to ensure Spears is properly supervised after her release.
A statement from the pair reads, "As parents of an adult child in the throes of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe.
"We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded.
"We ask only that the court's orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted."
The singer remains under the temporary conservatorship of her father, an arrangement which allows Jamie to control her finances, legal affairs and even restrict visitors to his daughter.

WARNER BOSS DENIES JAY-Z LABEL TALKS
Warner Music Group boss LYOR COHEN has denied reports he's in talks with hip-hop mogul SHAWN 'JAY-Z' CARTER to launch his own record label.

The 99 Problems rapper left his post as president of Def Jam Records in December (07) after choosing not to renew his contract and on Thursday (07Feb08) the New York Daily News claimed the star is currently in negotiations with Cohen - his pal and former CEO at Def Jam - to start the tentatively titled Carter Music Group.
A source tells the newspaper, "The reason Jay left Def Jam was less about money than about freedom.
"He didn't want to come to the office every day. And he had so many outside projects - his chain of 40/40 clubs and the hotel he's building in Chelsea (New York). But he wouldn't mind having a small label for the talent he discovers. He might just put out three or four records a year. He'd let somebody else do the heavy lifting."
But Cohen insists he has not spoken to Carter about any record deal - although he wouldn't hesitate to do so if the opportunity should arise.
He says, "I would be honoured and privileged to work with him again. Bringing Jay-Z to the Warner Music Group would be a privilege and a coup. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
"(But) Jay never does anything small or part-time."
Cohen's relationship with Carter goes back a long way - the CEO signed the hip-hop star to Def Jam in 1997 and helped to promote the MC's own label Roc-A-Fella Records.

Pop superstar MADONNA has hit back at critics who objected to her using the United Nations headquarters in New York to host a charity party which tied in with the launch of a new Gucci store.

The luxury fashion brand co-hosted the lavish event with the singer on Wednesday (06Feb08) night, which featured guest stars including Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Drew Barrymore helping to raise money for UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and Madonna's Raising Malawi Orphan Care Initiative.
But the company came under fire for combining the charity event with the launch of a new shop in the city, leading to fears the event was more of a commercial venture than a fundraising gala.
But Madonna dismissed the reports, insisting the sponsorship from Gucci was crucial if she was to attract enough attention to her good causes.
She says, "I don't really pay any attention to that. I am grateful that Gucci has underwritten this event, that's all that matters to me - their generosity. There's always controversy surrounding anything that involves change.
"I want to put Raising Malawi on the map. I want credibility as a philanthropic organisation. I want to inspire people. I don't want them to just write me a check: I want them to give me a piece of their heart."

50 CENT DENIES CLOSING CLOTHING COMPANY
Rapper 50 CENT has denied he will be closing his fashion label G-Unit - after talk of redundancies led to speculation the company may be shut down.

The star - real name Curtis Jackson - launched the clothing firm in 2004 in partnership with Marc Ecko Enterprises, which owns 50 per cent of the brand.
The company is rumoured to be on the verge of announcing heavy job cuts after a poor year of trading.
But representatives for 50 Cent told Allhiphop.com that closing G-Unit is definitely not on the star's agenda, adding, "They aren't shutting down.
"They may be leaving their partner, but the G-Unit brand is a base business of $75 million dollars annually."

JUDGE ORDERS STEWART TO SETTLE LAWSUIT
A judge has ordered ROD STEWART's son SEAN to settle a lawsuit with a married couple he stands accused of assaulting.

Alleged victims Tobalus and Ericka Stein have accused Sean Stewart of pelting their car with bricks and other items, including a mailbox, in Los Angeles last year (07).
The couple claim they were attacked when the 27-year-old became enraged after partygoers refused him and a friend entrance to a party.
Stein also insists she was rushed to hospital suffering from "massive lacerations" after the alleged attack.
The judge has set a settlement hearing for Monday (11Feb08) in a bid to resolve the issue.
This is not the only court hearing Stewart currently faces. He also stands accused of attacking a man in a bar brawl at Hollywood's LAX nightclub in 2006. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 April (08).

BARKER DONATES $1 MILLION TO FORMER COLLEGE
Big-hearted U.S. TV host BOB BARKER has donated $1 million (GBP500,000) to his former college in a bid to end animal cruelty.

The former The Price Is Right presenter - who attended the school in 1947 - has given the generous gift to Drury University, Missouri to establish an undergraduate animal ethics program.
He says, ""It's incredible that I ever was able to go back to Springfield and give them a million dollars, because when I was there, I didn't have 15 cents,"
"What I'm hoping is that this will become a model for other undergraduate schools."
And the star is confident his generosity will help young people make an ethical stand against animal cruelty.
He adds, "If young people are introduced to the terrible exploitation and mistreatment of animals in society, it will help influence them in anything they do."
It's not the first ambitious animal rights project for Barker - he has funded schemes to establish animal rights curricula at law schools throughout the U.S. over the past decade.

But Pitt insists the story is completely made up.

DAD TO MOVE IN WITH SPEARS
BRITNEY SPEARS' father is determined to make sure his daughter is safe and sane after her release from hospital on Wednesday (06Feb08) - by moving in with her.
LYNEE and JAMIE SPEARS
Jamie Spears, who was granted control of the troubled star's financial and legal affairs after she was committed to the psychiatric ward at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles last week (31Jan08), plans to become the singer's new full-time companion.
Insiders claim Jamie is far from happy that his daughter has been released from hospital, just three days after doctors told the family they'd be keeping Spears for 14 days to carry out further psychiatric tests on her.
A source tells U.S. publication Life + Style, "The doctors decided that as long as she's taking her medication - which she has been doing - Britney is no longer a threat (to herself).
"Jamie begged the doctors to keep her in longer. He was very disappointed with the decision.
"So Jamie decided to move into the house with her and look after her. And that's good for now, because Britney wants her daddy."

RONSON: 'GRAMMYS WILL BE BORING WITHOUT WINEHOUSE'
Music producer MARK RONSON is hoping pal AMY WINEHOUSE attends the Grammys in Los Angeles on Sunday (10Feb08) - because the event will be 'boring without her'.

Winehouse is currently seeking permission to enter the U.S. to attend the star-studded Los Angeles ceremony, where she is nominated for six awards.
But the singer's alleged drug taking could scupper her chances of being granted a visa, after she was filmed allegedly smoking crack cocaine in footage obtained by a British tabloid newspaper.
And Ronson - who collaborated with Winehouse on her sophomore album Back To Black - insist the Grammys will be lacking in fun if the 24-year-old is unable to attend.
He says, "I hope Amy can make it. It'll be boring without her."
Winehouse was banned from the U.S. last October (07) after she was arrested and fined in Norway for possession of cannabis.

GRAMMY ORGANISERS CONFIDENT OF WINEHOUSE APPEARANCE
Organisers of this Sunday's (10Feb08) Grammys are confident AMY WINEHOUSE will perform at the event - after allocating rehearsal time for the star and her band.

The star - who is nominated for six awards at the star-studded event - was released from rehab on Monday (03Feb08) to apply for a U.S. visa, however no decision has yet been made on whether she will be granted entry into the States.
But according to blogger Marc Malkin, Winehouse is scheduled to rehearse with the Dap-Kings band at 12:30pm on Friday (09Feb08) at the Staples Center. If the practise session goes according to plan, the singer will perform hits Rehab and You Know I'm No Good.
Malkin also claims seats in the audience are being held for Winehouse's entourage.
A representative for the Grammys confirms, "They're holding a spot for her. It'll be close if it happens."
Winehouse's visa has been the subject of much speculation after she was admitted to London's Capio Nightingale clinic just days after footage of her allegedly smoking crack cocaine was procured by a British tabloid newspaper last month (Jan08).
