SPEARS HOSPITALISED

BRITNEY SPEARS has been taken by ambulance from her Los Angeles mansion and admitted to the city's UCLA hospital.

The star's ambulance was surrounded by a convoy of police cars as it left her Beverly Hills home, after a major incident which saw the property surrounded by emergency services.

Police, paramedics and U.S. rangers were seen entering the star's luxury compound and opening the property's fire gates late on Wednesday (30Jan08) night.

Spear's mother Lynne, who is in L.A. visiting her elder daughter, was seen entering the house, followed by the star's father Jamie, who was seen crying as he arrived at the property.

As the pop star was whisked away to hospital, Lynne Spears was seen following the ambulance in a car with her daughter's on/off paparazzo boyfriend Adnan Ghalib.

Spears was admitted to UCLA at around 1.30am on Thursday (31Jan08) morning, with her longtime companion/manager Sam Lutfi seen leaving the facility a short time later.

The star will be held at the hospital on a metal health order, according to TMZ.com.

The 26-year-old was previously admitted to L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center earlier this month (03Jan08) after a three-hour stand-off with police, and was held for two days on a '5150 hold' order, meaning medics have reason to believe she is a danger to herself or others.

U.K. UPHOLDS SNOOP BAN

SNOOP DOGG has failed in his bid to persuade U.K. officials to lift a ban preventing him from entering the country.

The Beautiful hitmaker, real name Calvin Broadus, is prohibited form entering Britain after he was involved in a brawl at London's Heathrow Airport in April 2006 - but recently wrote to the Home Office in a bid to get the order overturned.

Broadus was keen to visit the U.K. this month (Jan08) to launch a new advertisement for European mobile phone giant Orange, but attempts by both the telecoms company and the rapper himself to gain a visa have failed, according to Allhiphop.com.

The incident at the British airport left seven police officers injured and led to the star being handed a caution for affray and a ban on returning to the country.

Broadus' criminal record also led to him being denied entry into Australia in April 2007.

U2 FOLLOW PRINCE TO THE O2

Irish rockers U2 are to follow in the footsteps of PRINCE and the SPICE GIRLS by hosting a residency at London's O2 Arena.

The band are due to start work on their forthcoming album, which is reportedly scheduled to hit shops around October (08), and their manager Paul McGuinness is hoping to book in a string of dates at the venue to coincide with its release.

McGuinness says, "It's (the O2 Arena) got great potential for U2 and because it's under cover you can do a run of shows in the autumn."

"I figured he was drunk, so the next day I said, 'Those were great lyrics you wrote to me!' and he was like, 'Uh, yeah, lyrics!'"

STEWART BLAMED FOR THE FACES SPLIT

ROD STEWART has been blamed for splitting up supergroup THE FACES - because he was too busy carving out a solo career.

Stewart's ex-bandmate Ian McLagan has accused the rocker of selfishly concentrating on his own music and neglecting the band which also included Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones.

McLagan says, "The result was that he was reluctant to give his songs to us.

"He'd give his solo albums first choice. It left us out in the cold and there was no way around it."

And McLagan has hinted The Faces may reunite later this year (08).

He adds, "I've spoken to Kenney and Ronnie, who's keen, but I haven't spoken to Rod more than a couple of words, so we will have to wait and see."

BLIGE: 'WINEHOUSE IS PERFECT'

R+B superstar MARY J. BLIGE has hit out at reports troubled singer AMY WINEHOUSE is a bad role model - insisting she sets the 'perfect example'.

The Back to Black hitmaker was admitted to a London rehabilitation centre last week (25Jan08) in a bid to finally end her drug problems.

Winehouse, 24, has come under fire for setting a bad example to her fans and glamorising cocaine use.

But Blige, a former drug addict, believes Winehouse is receiving unfair criticism.

She says, "Amy's music means something. If you look at the truth, leadership and honest in music, Amy is the perfect example.

"She's probably the best thing in the business now. I hope I can collaborate with her."

THE ENEMY: 'ARCTIC MONKEYS ARE DULL'

Rockers THE ENEMY have accused fellow British band ARCTIC MONKEYS of dumbing down the music industry with their 'dull' songs.

Frontman Tom Clarke admits he was initially impressed with the Arctic Monkeys introduction to the music scene, but claims their second studio album Favourite Worst Nightmare was a disappointment.

Clarke says, "That first video was out - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - y'know, I looked at that and I thought: 'There's a bunch of working class lads from a proper town playing a tune like they mean it'.

"It was quality and I went out and bought the first album and I thought it was top - some really good songs on there.

"(But) I was bitterly disappointed when I got the second - just dull. Certain aspects of their music on the second album, and certain aspects of their personas in the press, are just dull."

The two bands go head-to-head in the Best Album category at this year's (08) NME Awards.

STERN 'TOOK PICTURES OF DANIEL SMITH'S COLLAPSED BODY'

Late star ANNA NICOLE SMITH's longtime companion/lawyer HOWARD K. STERN took photographs of her dead son's body for profit, it has been claimed.

Daniel Smith died from a drug overdose three days after his mother gave birth to baby daughter Dannielynn in September 2006. He was 20.

G. Ben Thompson, former companion of Anna Nicole told the inquest into Daniel's death in Bahamian capital of Nassau that Stern said the photographs "might be worth some money one day."

Thompson told the inquest, "I was totally shocked he was taking pictures of a dead child laying in that bed.

Stern's attorney Shaka Serville hit back at the claims - insisting he took the photographs of Daniel's body to prove to Anna Nicole that her son was dead.

Witnesses have already testified that the late glamour model was highly distraught after his collapse.

Meanwhile, Thompson's son Gayther, alleges Stern appeared to dispose of two white pills he had found in Daniel's clothes after his collapse in the hospital room.

Testimony in the inquest was adjourned on Wednesday (30Jan08) until 17 March while court officials seek testimony from witnesses including Anna Nicole's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead.

Police investigating Daniel's death have said there is no evidence of homicide, and an autopsy found the likely cause was a combination of drugs, including methadone and antidepressants.

BLANCHETT MISTAKEN FOR FILM TECHNICIAN BY QUEEN'S HUSBAND

Oscar-winning actress CATE BLANCHETT was stunned after the British monarch's husband PRINCE PHILIP asked her to fix his DVD player.

British newspaper The Daily Telegraph claims the Queen's husband told the pregnant star, "There's a cord sticking out of the back of the machine. Might you tell me where it goes?"

But a spokesman for Buckingham Palace failed to recall his meeting with Miss Blanchett.

He says, "The Duke of Edinburgh meets so many people when he is escorting the Queen on engagements."

"These are often film stars, actors and actresses. I cannot recall an occasion recently when he might have met Miss Blanchett but we do not always get guest lists for every engagement or social function."

TRUMP SUED FOR $4 BILLION

Real estate mogul DONALD TRUMP is facing a $4 billion (£2 billion) lawsuit from a Las Vegas property management company after he was accused of monopolising the market in the city.

The Apprentice star is alleged to have unfairly blocked property firm Nights at Vegas from leasing out a number of the condominiums in the Trump International Hotel & Tower.

Nights at Vegas takes a 20 per cent cut of the rental income when it leases out an apartment in the complex, while Trump owns a management company that takes 50 per cent of the lease income.

But bosses at Nights at Vegas claim Trump has banned them from conducting business using the name Trump in any of its advertising or marketing in relation to the condos at the Trump International - making promotion of the properties virtually impossible for the firm, reports TMZ.com.

Nights at Vegas is suing on the grounds of violation of anti-trust laws, declaratory relief for non-infringement of trademark, false promotion and unfair competition. The company is seeking $1 billion (£500 million) in compensation, with another $3 billion (£1.5 million) in punitive damages.
